About Us
Le groupe Back Alley Roots Band est né pendant la période de la pandémie de COVID, lorsque Jane Critchlow, Larry Cassini et Roger Haughey, trois amis, organisaient des jam sessions en plein air, dans le respect des distances sociales, dans le jardin de Roger, accessible uniquement par une ruelle. Jouant pour eux-mêmes, leurs partenaires et leurs voisins des immeubles voisins, le trio s'est rendu compte qu'il avait un mélange vocal unique, un amour commun pour le folk rock, la musique roots et traditionnelle, ainsi qu'un talent pour interpréter ses propres compositions.
The Back Alley Roots Band arose from the dark days of the COVID Pandemic, when friends Jane Critchlow, Larry Cassini and Roger Haughey would have outdoor, socially distanced jam sessions in Roger’s back yard, accessible only by an unpaved laneway. Playing for themselves, their companions, and neighbors in nearby buildings, the trio found they had a unique vocal blend, and a shared love of folk rock, roots and traditional music, along with a talent for performing their original songs.
Bios
Larry Cassini
Larry Cassini is a Montreal-based folk, rock and roots guitarist, singer/songwriter, whose heartfelt songs blend Canadiana with the soulful energy of rock, gospel, and blues. As a founding member of The Echo Hunters, Cassini helped shape the band’s distinctive sound across three albums, including the critically acclaimed Cabin Fever. With The Echo Hunters, he toured
extensively across Canada, the southern US, and the UK, earning a devoted following for their soulful harmonies and roots-infused energy. Earning them a respected place within Montreal’s vibrant music community.
Beyond his work with The Echo Hunters, Cassini has brought his musicianship to The People’s Gospel Choir of Montreal (Vibe Award-2004 Urban/Soul Album of the year) and The Durham County Poets (2019 Juno Nominee) adding his versatile touch to projects that blend gospel, folk, and blues traditions. He currently guitarist for the Peoples gospel Choir and founding Singer/guitarist with The Back Alley Roots Band.
Jane Critchlow
Celtic, jazz, blues, roots, and soul singer Jane Critchlow honed her craft as a member of Le Choeur en Fugue and La Bohème choirs, showcasing her talents as a soloist on their albums and performing at Montreal's Place des Arts. Earlier, Jane was lead vocalist of the alt-rock group At First Glance and opened for renowned Australian rock band INXS at the Montreal Spectrum during their international tour. As a jazz soloist with the Preville Jazz big band, she also performed a series of big band concerts at Club Med.
Recent musical ventures include a Celtic quartet (Sassenach), a folk trio showcasing three-part harmonies (Wavesong), a soprano in Mouth Music Celtic Choir under Linda Morrison's direction, and a jazz ensemble collaboration with pianist Jean Séguin. Her musical repertoire has expanded to encompass a wide range of styles and influences as well as performances on percussion, bouzouki, and the bodhrán (Irish drum).
Roger Haughey
Roger's passion for music began at a young age, appearing in several musical and theatrical productions with New Hampshire’s Andy’s Summer Playhouse. He picked up the bass in high school influenced by the music of the Grateful Dead, Parliament/Funkadelic, Joni Mitchell, and bluegrass bands like the Seldom Scene.
Roger has been writing and performing ever since, and playing and singing traditional music in daycares around Montreal, as part of the house band at Montreal’s Hillbilly Night, and performing with bands in Washington DC, Toronto, and Montreal. In the Back Alley Roots band, Roger plays upright and acoustic bass and sings.
Larry Cassini
Larry Cassini est un guitariste, auteur-compositeur-interprète folk, rock et roots basé à Montréal, dont les chansons sincères
mêlent la culture canadienne à l'énergie soul du rock, du gospel et du blues.
En tant que membre fondateur du groupe The Echo Hunters, Cassini a contribué à façonner le son distinctif du groupe à travers trois albums, dont Cabin Fever, acclamé par la critique. Jane Critchlow
Chanteuse de musique celtique, jazz, blues, roots et soul, Jane Critchlow a d'abord chanté dans les chorales Le Chœur en Fugue et La Bohème, apparaissant comme soliste sur leurs albums et se produisant à la Place des Arts de Montréal.
Jane a été la chanteuse principale du groupe de rock alternatif At First Glance et a été engagée pour assurer la première partie du groupe de rock australien INXS au Spectrum de Montréal lors de leur tournée internationale. En tant que soliste de jazz avec le Preville Jazz big band, elle a également donné une série de concerts au Club Med.
Ses projets musicaux récents comprennent un quatuor celtique (Sassenach), un trio folklorique à harmonies (Wavesong), le Mouth Music Celtic Choir dirigé par Linda Morrison et un ensemble de jazz avec le pianiste Jean Séguin. Roger Haughey
La passion de Roger pour la musique a commencé dès son plus jeune âge, lorsqu'il a participé à plusieurs productions musicales et théâtrales avec Andy's Summer Playhouse, dans le New Hampshire. Il s'est mis à la basse au secondaire, influencé par la musique des Grateful Dead, de Parliament/Funkadelic, de Joni Mitchell et de groupes de bluegrass comme The Seldom Scene. Depuis, Roger compose et se produit sur scène. Il joue et chante de la musique traditionnelle dans des garderies de la région de Montréal, fait partie du groupe habituel du Hillbilly Night à Montréal et se produit avec des groupes à Washington DC, Toronto et Montréal. Au sein du groupe Back Alley Roots, Roger joue de la contrebasse et de la basse acoustique et chante.
